The Daiquiri
45ml White rum
25ml Lime juice
5ml Sugar
Shake that bad boy and double strain it into a coupe or champagne saucer. Garnish with a lime
According to Wikipedia:
The basic recipe for a Daiquirí is similar to the grog British sailors drank aboard ship from the 1740s onwards. By 1795 the Royal Navy daily grog ration contained rum, water, ¾ ounce of lemon or lime juice, and 2 ounces of sugar.[5] This was a common drink across the Caribbean, and as soon as ice became available this was included instead of the water. Jennings Cox’s story is certainly a popular one and maybe he was responsible for the naming of the drink, but as far as creating it he was about 150 years late.
According to me:
I work in the cocktail bar above the Floridita bar in Soho which is the spiritual grandchild of the apocryphal “home of the daiquiri”, I know a little bit about this drink. First off the IBA recipe is lame. For me a good daiquiri is:
50ml Gold rum (Flor de Cana 7 if you have it and Havana 5 if you don’t)
35ml Lime juice
15ml Simple syrup
I want my drink to have a kick damnit, also I’d like more than half a shot of liquid in the glass once the mixing is done. The gold rum imparts a much deeper, sweeter taste than its bland white cousin, the extra lime helps balance that and the extra sugar is needed to take the edge out of all that citrus.
Okay the IBA lists the banana daiquiri as a cocktail, but I’m sticking it in with the other fruit cocktails. Daiquiri is a wonderful base drink that you can do almost anything with. Pick a fruit or liqueur and there’s probably a daiquiri out there somewhere with it included. My favourites are of course the classic and strawberry, but at work we serve a mean basil and honey daiquiri.
As for frozen daiquiris I’m not a fan. That is to say I’m not a TGI blender jockey any more, so if you want a slush puppy I suggest you mosey on elsewhere because that ain’t my style. Seriously, frozen drinks are for people who don’t like to drink alcohol.
